They shoot video for commercial and non-profit clients and, in our case, produce a 5-10 minute weekly scuba show. The visuals are clean, soundtrack soothing, and make for a nice diversion at work.

Current episodes:

For those of you who don't know, Mary Lynn runs DiveFilm, which is an outstanding site hosting short video podcasts relating to the dive world. Mary Lynn, herself, contributes some of the work on DiveFilm, but she's not alone: other awesome videographers have added their work to the DiveFilm library. if you haven't checked it out, you really should (and subscribe to their feed on iTunes!).

The seminar, called "Editing Basics for Underwater Videographers and Photographers," was aimed largely at people who want to understand how video can increase their bottom line (selling dive travel, underwater housings, etc.). While Mary Lynn explained the concept of video-as-marketing-tool, she also did an excellent job including some practical information for n00bs who want to learn how to begin shooting and editing their own dive films. Of course, like with most things, practice is the only way to improve, but Mary Lynn hammered home the idea that:

Anybody can make videos.

It's easy.

It's fun.

After attending the seminar, I can't wait to get my own video camera and get cracking!

I took notes during her presentation. What follows are my notes.10:54 AM
I'm in room S320D, preparing to hear Mary Lynn Price speak on video editing. In her presentation, "Editing Basics for Underwater Videographers and Photographers," she plans to introduce n00bs to video editing. At present, she's going over what she's going to be going over during her official presentation.

11 AM
Mary Lynn introduces herself. A former trial attorney, she opens with some good lawyer jokes (Q. "Why don't sharks eat lawyers?" A. "Professional courtesy.") She discusses Dive.Film.com and briefly explains what it is. She also concisely defines podcast ("alternative content distibution"). She claims shooting and editing video can be done easily, even for people who don't already do it. She also claims the Video Revolution is just beginning.

11:10 AM
Thanks to high-speed Internet access, Price claims more and more people are accessing video online. Moreover, people are creating content and sharing it online. For example, DiveFilm is featured on iTunes alongside Nat Geo shorts -- and she does her work for very little money. Examples of sites that use video effectively include Light & Motion, Eric Hanauer, DUI-Online, and San Diego Shark Diving (a company for whom Price used to work).

11:20 AM
Considering she's selling people on WHY video is important for modern times, she's explaining different kinds of video formats, including videos set to music (the bulk of dive-related videos, including "Sharks and Their Kin with Marty Snyderman," a portion of which she previews), and documentary videos, which include so-called interviews and storytelling without words. Price claims there's no such thing as "B-roll" or cutaway footage; everything you shoot and use is "A-roll." Using a Sony A1U HD camera inside a Light & Motion housing, Mary Lynn shows how to cut a day's footage of shark diving -- or interviews with professionals, like Eric Cheng -- into a short asset.

11:30 AM
What you need:

Camera (she uses the Sony A1U HD camera but also recommends the new, small HC3 camera, which is roughly half the price)

External mics for interviews

Light & Motion A1U Bluefin housing (depends on your camera, of course)

Video editing programs (she uses Final Cut Pro)

11:32 AM
Shoot to edit! -- editing begins before the dive

Think about what story you want to shoot on the dive

Get tight, medium, and wide shots

Leave "handles" before and after the action is going on

Transition shots

11:35 AM
Editing Basics:

Capture the footage and put it into the computer

She uses Final Cut Pro, but she's showing how to use iMovie -- it's so, so easy.

Edit (build sequence)

Don't know how to begin?

Try selecting the music first and choose the images to accompany the soundtrack

Assembly edit -- put it together so it makes intuitive sense for a viewer (beginning of interview, middle, end...). Perhaps, begin with the audio track.

Music

Mark the beats in the music and match the marks to the footage.

Use legal soundtracks.

Make your own music.

Buy it (smartsound.com)

Get a musician friend to contribute.

Google "Royalty-free sound effects"

Output (send final product to storage or delivery medium)

Well, guess what? Part III, Sharks At Risk, airs tonight. In tonight's episode, Cousteau seeks to dispel two myths: first, that sharks are not mindless man-eaters; and second, that the ocean is not brimming with the creatures.

In Sharks at Risk, Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team meet sharks face-to-face in Rangiroa (220 miles northeast of Tahiti), the second-largest <nowrap></nowrap>coral atoll in the world, and an underwater paradise famous for its large concentration of sharks -- which faces huge threats. They also explore the world of great whites in South Africa's "Shark Alley." If you want to read a summary of tonight's episode, check out PBS' website, which also hosts a 2-minute sneak-peak of the episode. But don't let that spoil your appetite for tonight!

Maybe it was on accident when navigating through a swim-through, or maybe it was while trying to get that "perfect shot." Of course, we all know we're not supposed to touch coral, but sometimes it happens. And, after all, it's not really that bad, right?

Well, according to Stephan at Beautiful Oceans, it IS that bad. In a recent podcast, Stephan explains what happens when divers touch a coral reef and what may happen to coral colonies when we do (worst case scenario: coral colony eradication). Although some coral is hardier than others, Stephan makes an obvious, practical suggestion: don't touch any of it. Give the short podcast a listen, and maybe on your next dive, you'll try harder to avoid the coral.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Photographers Damage Reefs More Than Non-Photographers

Filed under: Organizations, Flora & Fauna, Experts, Podcasts

This statement -- while controversial -- shouldn't be all that surprising. After all, some photographers carry around a lot of bulky gear, and they can't possibly attend to their buoyancy, set up for a shot, and watch out for the coral all at the same time, right?

Recently, Stephan and Ian from Beautiful Oceans have started podcasting, and the podcasts are very intelligently done. In their most recent podcast, for example, Stephan explains that specialist photographers -- divers using big, bulky camera equipment -- cause an average of 1.6 coral breaks every 10 minutes. Extrapolating, this means a specialist diver causes an average of 112 coral breaks over a week-long vacation. That's awful! (In contrast, divers using small point-and-shoots "only" cause about 0.3 breaks every 10 minutes.) If you want to pick up some simple tips from Stephan about how NOT to destroy the coral while shooting marine life, head over and listen to his podcast. In five minutes, you can learn quite a bit from Stephan.

Stephan and Ian have a number of other podcasts posted, all of which are brief, articulate, and educational. I particularly liked the one concerning Fish Swimming Styles and their relative efficiencies. You'll never believe how fast a triggerfish can swim. Thanks, guys.
Jim and Dennis at Bottom Time Radio have two new podcasts that they've posted recently. Show #12 is an interesting interview with Eric Douglas from DAN. Show #13 features Brian Galecki, author of Rum Runners, U-boats, & Hurricanes. #13 also features me (I provided the news) and Scuba Kitten. The Sealab projectwere the Navy's experiments on saturation diving. At some point your body cannot absorb any more inert gas, as youtissues become full or saturated, your decompressiong obligation reaches a maximum, no matter how much more time youspend under pressure. Saturation diving is the backbone of naval and commercial deep sea diving; Sealab was the guineapig.

In 1965, Sealab II was placed in ~200 feet of water near Scripps Canyon and teams of divers stayed for 2 weeks at atime, while astronaut, Scott Carpenter, spent 30.The habitat was dry, with an air lock that allowed them to venture outside for experiments and excursions. Some of theneeded supplies were delivered by another experiment, a dolphin. The Sealab II site is still out there, it's a concretepad, though Sealab II itself was removed when the experiment was done.

Mary Lynn Price's DiveFilm videopod-casts are free and you don't need an iPod to watch them. If you have iTunes on your computer, click on thefollowing link to go directly to the DiveFilm Podcast Video page at the iTunes Music Store.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Podcasts With Jean-Michel Cousteau

Filed under: Flora & Fauna, Experts, Podcasts

If you want to learn more about Jean-Michel Cousteau's"Ocean Adventures," the Ocean Futures Society -- thenon-profit Jean-Michel created to bring awareness and protection to the world's oceans -- has several interesting podcasts available forlisteners. The first one is a general discussion of the "Ocean Adventures" series, highlighting theVoyage to Kure. Two others podcasts define and discuss Marine Sanctuarires. All of these make goodintroductions to Cousteau and the importance of the ocean in a healthy ecosystem.

Personally, however, I found the most recent two podcasts to be the MOST interesting. One is a discussionwith Jean-Michel's children, Celine and Fabien (who Erik interviewed recently), who talk abouttheir experiences working on the Ocean Adventures series and what it means to be a Cousteau. The other is an interviewwith Blair Mott, the Ocean Futures Society's chief diver, who explains what it takes to live up to Cousteau'sstandards.

All of them are good. None of them are overly-long. Any of them would make a nice companion duringlunchtime.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bottom Time Radio's Show #11

Bottom Time Radio's newest podcast is available. Dennis and Jim havebecome quite adept at selecting interesting guests, asking them the right questions, and getting good responses. Fortwo "Regular Joe's," they've carved out quite an interesting and solid little niche.

Podcast #11 is divided into two parts. The first part is an interview with an excellent, articulate, and handsomeyoung man who reports on several dive-related items in the news recently. OK...OK...I admit it: it was me. Iprovided the news. If you've listened in the past, you might recall that I pre-recorded the news. This time, however, I spoke with Dennis and Jim over the phone and we discussed the news together. It was lots of fun, and I thinkit sounds great.

The second part - which is really the focus of the show - is an interview with Carrie Kohler, the wife of Richie Kohler. Carrie works with her husband on Dive Portal DVD, a soon-to-be-released semi-regular DVD magazine. Followingthe lead of DVD magazines like ScubaCore, Dive Portal will interview diveexperts and focus on dive news and destinations around the world.

Dennis and Jim are getting really good at interviewing people, and this podcast is no exception. Listen for yourself.

So cool. Yesterday, Foots emailed me some photos of the mold for thePyramid of Atlantis, which is under construction currently. And the pictures are friggin' sweet! According toFoots, the pyramid will be 18 feet tall and each base will be 22 feet long. When finished, the pyramid will weigh inexcess of 40,000 pounds and feature 8 swim-throughs. Ultimately, he plans to construct two of them for his City.

In a recent article, Lee Petersonhelps the novice camcorder-purchaser break down the important components of how to purchase a suitable underwater videocamera. The first question to consider, of course, is how much money you have to spend. Another importantconsideration is what you plan to do with the camera. Are you planning to shoot lots of high-speed action, like sharkfeedings? Maybe you want to shoot some tight, controlled scenes, like wrecks. Depending on your needs, your camerachoice will vary. He also warns against - and explains his rationale for - purchasing a camcorder to takestill shots.

Are you already an underwater video whiz? Then, you probably don't need to check out Peterson's article.Instead, you might want to read Bill's HDCamera Gift Guide. Alternatively, you might be interested in the DV show's podcast - partially recordedunderwater! - in which the presenter tackles some more advanced topics like aluminum versusacrylic housings; what kind of lenses work best; and more.

Pod Diver is "for hardcore scuba divers from hardcore scubadivers," and you can subscribe and listen to Pod Diver through a variety of sources. In his newest radiopodcast, for example, Joe talks to John Chattertonabout his new project, Dive Portal.

I subscribe to Pod DiverTV, and last night I watched episodes 7 and 8. They are great.Episode 7 describes scuba diving on Midway Island, which is 1100miles west of <state></state>
<place></place>
Hawaii - literally, in the middle of nowhere. In episode 7, Joe interviews local divemasters; provides somestunning underwater footage of some of the local wrecks and karst formations; and demonstrates how easy it is to seeone - or five! - Galapagos sharks on any particular dive. Midway's inaccessibility is its blessing:it's a bitch to get to, but once you're there, you're among a select group of divers to have visitedthis glorious spot.

Episode 8 is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Waterdance," which is a DVD showing how marineanimals move. From that description, I was not...let's say...chomping at the bit to watch the shortfilm, but it was really worth it. Episode 8 shows Donald Tipton and his crew diving with Atlantic spotted dolphins in Bimini. It begins a bit slowly - Tipton talking; the crewhorsing around on the liveaboard - but when Cocozza shows how close and how curious the dolphins are, it'sa truly remarkable thing. In the end, it was absolutely worth a watch.

Over the next few months,he'll be building it, and in August, Lloyd plans to deploy it in a lake in Australia. Using both plants and Like-A-Fish technology toprovide his oxygen, Lloyd will be the BioSUB's first resident. What a cool, exciting adventure!

As soon as I read about Lloyd, I wanted to learn more. Recently, I caught up with Lloyd, and he shared with me hisplans and hopes for the BioSUB. I recorded our conversation and turned it into Divester's third podcast. If you want some of the freshest dive-relatedpodcasts available, I'm pleased to announce that both Blue Beyond and Bottom Time Radio have posted their newestcasts online.

On Blue Beyond's podcast -- which they call The Surface Interval --Des and Bear discuss some of their recent dive trips, including Des' recent dive on the wreck of the SS Bombo off Wollongongand Bear's recent exploration of the shallow reefs around Melbourne. After that, they discuss the cameraindustry -- debating film versus digital -- and perform the first "Surface Interval StealthInterview," in which they talked with Steve James, one of Australia's leading rebreather divers. Meanwhile, podcast Number 8 from Bottom Time Radio contains an interview withJoe Porter of Wreck Diving Magazine. She has subsequently become mildly obsessed with him, wondering, for example, why he wears faded cords;why he's dating Bo Derek; and why he was in Lake Worth,Florida. Last night, while she was <strike>obsessing over him</strike> researching his relationship to South Florida, Iwas watching some of the recent clips I'd downloaded from DiveFilm.

Mary Lynn Price's The Night Mantas of Konashowcases some of the most beautiful footage I've ever seen, documenting a night dive at the Kona Surf Hotel, a spotwhose bright lights attract plankton, and in turn, mantas with 16-foot wingspans. As educational as it wasawe-inspiring, Price's piece featured an interview with Keller Laros (of Manta Pacific, which has a narrative history of the dive site) and otherdivers who simultaneously promote the dive site and protect the beautiful animals. Recent researchhas revealed that marine reserves (think: no-fishing zones) improve the health of coral reefs as well as increasinglocalized fish populations.

Formerly, scientists had been concerned that large fish heading to protected zones in the Caribbean would disturbthe delicate balance of the reefs. Fearing that large predators (like Nassau grouper) would eat smaller algae-eatingfish (like parrotfish) - and, thus, cause the algae on the corals to grow uncontrollably, which would kill them- the scientists were pleasantly surprised to discover that the grouper only ate the smaller species of parrotfish, and leftthe bigger parrotfish to do their algae-munching. The researchers determined that large parrotfish escape becominglunch, because they're just too big for the grouper toswallow. Hmmm...restricted fishing means bigger fish, which means healthier reefs (and happier divers!).Who'd've believed it?!

Among the best was Confessions of a Shark Wrangler, a short videocast from DiveFilm. In her short piece, Mary Linn Price interviews Jessie "SharkChick" Harper, a woman who leads shark diving tours off San Diego . It was a very interesting portrait of aperson with a very unusual job. Around since 2000, DiveFilm showcases underwater films produced specifically for theinternet. DiveFilm features a lot of interesting short films about diving (check out Drifters of the Deep Blue Sea), and they're all free towatch. If you use iTunes, you can subscribe to their podcast feed and get them delivered directly to youriPod!

One more thing - DiveFilm is looking for underwater imagers tosubmit their short digital films. If you've always dreamed of having your movies available for others to see, this might be your big break!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Bottomtime Podcast

Filed under: Media, Beginners, Experts, Podcasts

Jim and Dennis from Bottom Time Radio just posted their newestpodcast, which I think sounds like a real doozey!
